MELISA is a blood test to aid the diagnosis of metal hypersensitivity. It is used worldwide by healthcare professionals to help determine whether patients are hypersensitive to metals commonly used in dental restorations or medical implants. Further test applications include Lyme disease.

Many will have seen the devastating news that singer Celine Dion has been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome. We wanted to highlight the remarkable case of Dana Jeske, a mechanical engineer living near Seattle, who experienced intermittent paralysis for five years, before regaining his ability to walk and move his body normally after he had all metal implants taken out of his body and teeth. The Mayo Clinic had diagnosed him with Stiff Person Syndrome. His case is described in the YouTube video by Dr Scott Schroeder.

Three months after surgery, in which 8 small stainless steel screws were placed in Jeske's, feet he started developing periodic episodes, where his body would go completely rigid. He could breath but could not talk or actively move any muscle in his body. This started at 45 minutes per day but the periodic “paralysis” progressed to 10-12 hours per day of immobility. For almost 6 years, this was his life.

Due to another foot problem requiring surgery, he returned to his surgeon Dr Schroeder, who noticed swelling over the areas the screws were placed and recommended removal of the screws. Overnight, Jeske went from being paralyzed 10-12 hours a day down to 3 hours a day.

Since Dr Schroeder had been studying metal allergies for years he sent Jeske’s blood for MELISA testing for metal allergies. The results showed that Jeske was allergic to nickel; the screws in his feet contained 14-16% nickel. MELISA also discovered he was HIGHLY allergic to palladium; the 2 white gold crowns in his mouth contained 26% palladium! Immediately after removal of his last palladium containing white gold crown all of his paralysis resolved.

At the November 2019 meeting of the FDA's Committee Investigating Metals Used in Medical Devices, Dr. Schroeder presented Jeske's case and the cases of some of his other patients. Over his thirty-year career, Dr. Schroeder has encountered numerous cases involving neuromuscular and other systemic symptoms (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Lupus & RA symptoms, brain fog, migraines, etc) that have dramatically improved or resolved once the offending metal was removed. In the past decade Dr Schroeder has removed over 1,000 implants in over 400 patients.

"Metal hypersensitivity testing should be offered to patients before surgery to minimize the risk of implant failure", concluded this study from Charles University, Prague; "especially those with autoimmune diseases, asthma, and/or allergies." In the study, 35 patients with failed orthopedic implants and 15 patients scheduled for orthopedic implant surgery were tested for metal hypersensitivity using the MELISA test. 40% of patients with failing implants had hypersensitivity reactions to a metal present in their implant.

"A possible metal allergy could be considered when a patient presents with nonspecific, possibly life-threatening complications, as seen with the patient in this case report." Here is another case, when nickel from surgical clips contributed to various health problems. Only when MELISA diagnosed nickel allergy and the clips were removed was there a change in health status: the patient's neuropathy improved, she had no more rashes, her fatigue significantly improved, and more. The authors conclude that potential allergens should be investigated BEFORE procedures involving surgical clips. Hypoallergenic clips should also be offered to those with a known reactivity to metals.

It can be difficult to pinpoint the cause of pain after implant surgery. In this case, it turned out to be a symptom of metal allergy, and only disappeared after implant removal. Eight years after the initial cervical implant surgery, a skin rash appeared on the sole of the patient’s foot. The rash didn’t improve with standard treatment and a patch test and LTT was performed to check for metal allergy. Metal allergy was diagnosed and the patient’s metal dentures were removed and replaced with ceramic ones. However, the skin rash did not improve until the cervical implant was removed, which also lead to disappearance of the chronic neck pain which had continued after the surgery.
